Can you smell the fresh rain as it hits the window or hear the wind rushing through the slight crack? I can as I shiver involuntarily at the sudden chill that the winter air brings. Pulling my blanket up to my chin, I looked up at the clock and stared in shock at the time. That couldn’t have been right, it was literally just 8pm a minute ago. But then I glanced back at the TV and saw the all too familiar “are you still watching?”. Now completely thrown off, I reached out aimlessly in search of the remote control. And that’s how it always starts. Almost always…
You never ever see it coming. It just slowly sneaks up on you and can really throw a wrench in your life plans. So in an effort to help keep you all from being blindsided, this week’s Fandom University lesson is all about the stages of fangirling.
1. The Discovery
Whether you already know of the TV show, band, book series, or had absolutely no idea of its existence, you somehow wind up deciding to give it a shot. You don’t really know what to expect. Would you enjoy it or would it be a waste of time? But you’ve been hearing so much about it from friends, family, even social media. So you decide to give it a shot. What’s the worse that can happen, right?
2. The Binge
Unexpectedly, you find yourself suddenly intrigued by the material in front of you. Before you know it, you’ve listened or watched more than just a little bit. You feel a magnetic pull that you can’t quite fight. Although, you’re not too sure you want to fight it. So you decide to indulge. Just a little bit, because you just have to find out what happens next.
3. The Fall
This is the stage where you slowly find yourself falling. Much like falling in love, this is often where fangirls suddenly find themselves blindsided. What once was just a simple curiosity is now suddenly a deep hunger and almost obsession. Throughout the day, you catch yourself thinking about the characters, the story, and you find yourself unable to turn away. It’s safe to say, you’re hooked.
4. The Investigation
Suddenly you find yourself wanting to learn more about the piece of work. So with the help of Google, you research everything. AND I MEAN EVERYTHING. Slowly, you begin figuring out who the actors are and innocently, you start watching their interviews and some behind the scenes stuff. Almost in an endless game of speed wiki, you find yourself entrenched in the deep black hole of the interwebs simply researching and learning everything you possibly can about the piece of work, the characters, the fandom, and everything in between.
5. The Nervous Wave Through the Window
This is when you discover that there’s a whole new world behind your sudden passion. It seems … dare I say it …. kind of fun. But you’ve heard about fangirls. They’re those crazy teenage girls who scream and chase after celebrities right? Almost like paparazzi in training. Yeah, I’d rather not thank you very much. This is one of the stages of fangirling where a lot of people find themselves stuck in. But maybe I’ll just take a small peek… no wait, that’s what you said when you first heard about the show and look what happened… #thestruggle …
6. The Endless Party
If you’re brave and reckless enough to have taken the leap into the world then congratulations!! You’re in and it’s probably been one of the best decisions you’ve made in your life. You keep finding out new things about the fandom which only makes you fall harder. You start stanning the stars, the OGs of the fandom, and before you know it, your fandom knowledge has skyrocketed. Basically, you now shape your life around them. Ideally, this is one of the stages of fangirling that you never want to leave.
7. The Sudden Heartbreak
It’s like you’re in heaven right now. Everything was going absolutely perfect and you can’t help but feel like a giddy little teenager in love. But just like everything else in this world, something suddenly changes. You’re not even sure how it happened. It just happened so slowly and you find yourself slowly losing interest. The characters you use to love so much are now annoying whiny bitches and you can’t help but roll your eyes at the ridiculous situations they seem to always find themselves in.
Of course, you keep following them though. I mean, you did do all of that research on them after all. But finally one day, you wake up and realize that your relationship with the fandom was past saving. Despite the great memories shared together, it was time to part ways and say goodbye.
8. The Surprise Encounter
In your dejected state of aimlessly wandering around, because you’re not really watching where you’re going, you suddenly run into something. You look up in shock… And cue the deja vu.
