Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical about a fictional rock and roll band fronted by a transgender East German singer, Hedwig Robinson. The book is by John Cameron Mitchell, and the music and lyrics are by Stephen Trask. The story draws on Mitchell’s life as the son of a U.S. Army Major General who once commanded the U.S. sector of occupied West Berlin.
Sometimes I debate with myself — don’t deny it you do it too!! When it comes to buying concert or performance tickets I agonize over the decision. Because of my incredible indecisiveness, I often lose out on great deals. So I have to find other ways to get cheap tickets last minute.
Not this time though! As soon as I read Pantages’s newsletter about Hedwig and the Angry Inch presale tickets I knew I had to jump on this. Mind you I got this particular email in May. The tickets were for November. I hate buying tickets that far in advance because who knows what would happen in between that time right? But I couldn’t resist it for this show. Plus, Darren Criss as Hedwig is basically a deal maker No way I wouldn’t find a way to go. I’ve been following him since his Harry Potter days.
What I didn’t know though was that it was the opening night. I stumbled upon the red carpet but because I didn’t see anyone remotely famous I decided to go in and find my seat. Turns out, I had missed seeing Jon Stamos, Taylor Lautner, and Riker Lynch for R5 O.o how I managed to wander around the theater without running into any of them is beyond me. #LifeinLA
I took photos of the stage and decor.
and the show? … AMAZING!!
At first glance, Hedwig seems like a goofy musical about a flamboyant and melodramatic transgender. But then you find out… it’s not. Boy was I impressed by Lena and Darren’s performance. Come to think of it, you probably would know the show’s intensity if you listened to the songs beforehand. Clearly I did not.
But the show was really truly heartbreaking. I don’t want to give away anything in case you’re like me and you go into a performance knowing absolutely nothing but the name and cast. Just know that it’s really a one man show.
So if you’re into action and multiple storylines going on at once – skip Hedwig. If you’re a lover of stories mixed with incredible vocals, lighting and hardcore rock music then I think you will enjoy this musical. But of course, you can listen to the entire show here and see if you like the music first, rather than going into the show blind like me 😉
After the musical, I was in no hurry to go anywhere so I decided to try the stagedoor and see about meeting Lena and Darren. Unfortunately Darren was too busy with all of his friends 😉 Of course that’s understandable. When you have so many of your loved ones around congratulating you, the last thing on your mind would be to go backstage to meet fans.
LENA THOUGH DID COME THROUGH OUR WAY. An insanely talented and sweet girl, she stopped to sign our playbills and take selfies with us. I was at an awkward angle and couldn’t grab one so I photobombed another girl’s haha we also did meet the drummer of the band so that was cool. Super talented guys man.
Yeah, so even though I would’ve loved to have seen Darren close up and tell him how much I love him it was still a great night.
If you’ve seen Hedwig and the Angry Inch what were your thoughts? Love it? Hate it? Better yet, have you seen Darren Criss as Hedwig?
