DARREN CRISS AS HEDWIG?? Um… yes, please!! And this is how that night went!!
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical about a fictional rock and roll band fronted by a transgender East German singer, Hedwig Robinson. The book is by John Cameron Mitchell, and the music and lyrics are by Stephen Trask. The story draws on Mitchell’s life as the son of a U.S. Army Major General who once commanded the U.S. sector of occupied West Berlin.
Sometimes I debate with myself — don’t deny it you do it too!! When it comes to buying concert or performance tickets I agonize over the decision. Because of my incredible indecisiveness, I often lose out on great deals. So I have to find other ways to get cheap tickets last minute.
Not this time though! As soon as I read Pantages’s newsletter about Hedwig and the Angry Inch presale tickets I knew I had to jump on this. Mind you I got this particular email in May. The tickets were for November. I hate buying tickets that far in advance because who knows what would happen in between that time right? But I couldn’t resist it for this show. Plus, Darren Criss as Hedwig is basically a deal maker. No way I wouldn’t find a way to go. I’ve been following him since his Harry Potter days.
What I didn’t know though was that it was the opening night. I stumbled upon the red carpet but because I didn’t see anyone remotely famous I decided to go in and find my seat. Turns out, the celebrities decided to show up after I gone into the theatre. How I missed seeing Jon Stamos, Taylor Lautner, and Riker Lynch for R5 wander around the theatre is beyond me. #LifeinLA
Something I love about Broadway shows is the creativity that goes into decorating the stage. Contrary to what you may think, elaborate set pieces or intricate lighting don’t make or break a Broadway show. But they certainly do help! The Pantages Theater is an incredible venue and with around 15 minutes to spare before the show started, I decided to take in the decorations with not only my eyes but with my handy dandy… IPhone… anyone get that reference?
and the show? … AMAZING!!
But then when you find out it’s not …. oh boy! I sometimes like to go into shows knowing absolutely nothing about the story or music. This way I can be sure to watch the show without any bias and was I impressed by Lena and Darren’s performances. (I love keeping these Playbills as a collector’s item)
The musical is truly heartbreaking. I don’t want to give anything away in case you’re like me and enjoy watching a Broadway show knowing absolutely nothing but the show name and cast. But just know that it’s really quite a one-man show.
So if you’re into action and multiple storylines going on at once – skip Hedwig.
Of course, you can listen to the entire show here and see if you like the music first, rather than going into the show blind like me 😉
After the musical, I was in no hurry to go anywhere so I decided to try the stage door and see about meeting Lena and Darren. Unfortunately Darren was too busy with all of his friends 😉 Of course, that’s understandable. When you have so many of your loved ones around congratulating you, the last thing on your mind would be to go backstage to meet fans.
LENA DID COME OUT THOUGH. An insanely talented and sweet girl, she stopped to sign our playbills and take selfies with us. I was at an awkward angle and couldn’t grab one so I photobombed another girl’s haha we also did meet the drummer of the band so that was cool. Super talented guys man.
Yeah, so even though I would’ve loved to have met Darren and tell him how much I love him, watching him perform as Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch still made for a great night.
